This year, Southwestern College hosted a group of Belarusian scholars and representatives for a two-day Belarusian Symposium, led by the Center for Belarusian Studies.

Leadership hosted an evening with Ken Yalowitz, Director of the Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College and Retired US Ambassador. The event took place Thursday, Oct. 6th. He spoke about international topics such as internships, travel, customs, cultural sensitivity, and young adult perspectives on civic responsibility and what it takes to volunteer. During the event, there was an array of flavorful international desserts.

It was a fun and relaxing way to interact with the speaker, listen to his thoughts, and ask him questions on global volunteerism. It opened up eyes to what it takes to have such a high ranking responsibility when representing your country within other countries.

Leadership Southwestern Hosts Carlota Ponds, Kansas Leadership Center

During the annual Lunches With Leaders week, Leadership Southwestern hosted Carlota Ponds from the Kansas Leadership Center.

Carlota Ponds is a native Kansan who left her state in the rear view mirror for southern California to attend college, work and live. But, after completing a bachelor’s degree in third world studies at the University of California – San Diego and briefly working as a newspaper reporter in Los Angeles, she realized there’s no place like her native-Kansas home. As a former community development specialist and director of a county health coalition, Ponds knows the value of collaborative work. Ponds is currently completing a master’s in public administration and she brings her passion for collaboration and personal empowerment to her new role as program associate.

Tag Wall, 3rd Year Team, was very excited about her presentation to students at Southwestern. "As a free lunch, this gives our students a unique opportunity throughout the week to interact... with leaders from across academia." " Carlota's experience and path to leadership continues to be one of diversity and overcoming challenges. She helped open our eyes to the ideas of leadership in whatever field we are interested in and more specifically how our faith can be an integral part of the journey."

Family Day Activites Planned For October 17th, 2009

Leadership Southwestern will be hosting a Family Tailgate Party for Leadership students' families at 11:30am before the Southwestern VS Bethany Homecoming game. This will be held outdoor on the Warren Lawn.

For this pot-luck style meal, please bring a side dish. Leadership Southwestern will provide the hamburgers and hot dogs.
