Kids In The Wild!!!

Kids in the Wild was the first of numerous senior projects this year.  Eighteen children between eight and twelve years old attended the event held at Moore Biological Field Station. These children were all involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS).   In the morning the children did two different activities.  One was a nature hike where they look at many things that are different from what they are used to and just enjoyed being out in nature.  The second activity was seining Dutch Creek and letting the kids handle and look at the different species of fish and other animals that live in the stream.  For lunch the children were able to cook hotdogs over campfires and the got to eat s'mores.  In the afternoon the children got to learn how to shoot bows and arrows from Tami Pullins as well as do a scavenger hunt and learn about plants such as indian toilet paper.  The kids had a fun time as well as learned things that they do not see on a regular basis and got to be outdoors for a day.

San Diego Trip Update

Leadership Southwestern is preparing for the wildest rumpus of them all! We’re spreading our wings and setting sail for good ol’ San Diego. We will be serving Mother Nature by working with Mission Trails National Park, cleaning up trails, restoring habitats, removing graffiti, and planting shrubs and trees. What would an outdoor trip be without a little bit of bonding over a group hike? We will also be getting in touch with our inner animals when we visit the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park. Because it is peak whale migrating season, a trip to the beach for a bonfire and whale watching is a must. We are planning on getting a bit cultured by visiting San Diego’s historic Balboa Park, complete with museums, historic buildings, and plenty of lush gardens. Of course, no trip is complete without a little bit of shopping at Horton Plaza, San Diego’s outdoor mall and shopping center. A stop off in historic Old Town for some of the best Mexican food in the city is definitely in order. Ships will fly out of Wichita January 5^th and return January 10^th, just in time for a new semester at SC. Heart of Leadership Award 2010

Leadership Southwestern is giving out $500 to a service group for their commitment to positive change. The Heart of leadership Award is to help fund a National Honor Society’s, Church Youth Groups’, and/ or Project Transformation’s project that is geared towards service learning.  If you are interested or know of anyone who would be interested the website for the application is http://www.sckans.edu/undergraduate/leadership/heart-of-leadership-award/ . I, too was in National Honor Society and found at times it was difficult to find money to do all my projects.  Here at Leadership Southwestern we are trying to give back and help those who share our mission to change ourselves and the world around us through servant leadership.
